Alappuzha is a region of the vast Arabian Sea and the rivers flowing into it. In the early 20th century, Lord Curzon, then Viceroy of the Indian Empire, visited the state of Alleppey (now Alappuzha). Alappuzha is one of the 14 districts in the Indian state of Kerala. It was created as Alleppey District on 17 August 1957 and was renamed Alappuzha in 1990. The headquarters city, Alleppey, was renamed Alappuzha in 2012, but the English name is still widely used to describe the city and region. George Curzon described Alappuzha as a city of canals, rivers, beaches and lakes. British Viceroy of India in the early 10th century. In other words, it is called the "Venice of the Eastern World".
