Kannur is a district in northern Kerala rich in culture and history. It has long been a port and trading center, maintaining trade links with many nations, including the Greeks, Romans and Arabs. Being a part of the Western Ghats, it is rich in natural resources. Kannur is one of 14 districts on the west coast of the Indian state of Kerala. Kannur city is the center of the district from which it takes its name. Its original name Cannanore is the Anglicized form of the Malayalam name "Kannur". Kannur district borders Kasaragod district to the north, Kozhikode district to the south, Mahe district to the southwest and Wayanad district to the east. It is bordered by the Western Ghats bordering Karnataka (Kodagu district) to the east. To the west is the Arabian Sea. Paitalmala is the highest (1372 m) in Kannur district. The southern part of the district includes Mahe district of the Union Territory of Puducherry. The district was established in 1957.
