Kottayam is a city in the Indian state of Kerala. It is located in central Kerala and is the administrative city of Kottayam district. Kottayam is a unique country surrounded by the high and majestic Western Ghats in the east, Vembanad Lake in the west and Kottayam rice fields in the west. Kottayam is one of the 14 districts in the Indian state of Kerala. Kottayam district has 6 cities: Kottayam, Changanassery, Pala, Erattupetta, Ettumanoor and Vaikom. This is the only part of Kerala that does not border the Arabian Sea or any other Indian state. The district is bordered by hills to the east, Vembanad Lake and Kuttanad paddy fields to the west. Features of the area include rice fields, rolling hills and rolling hills. According to the 2011 census, 28.6% of the region's population lives in cities and the literacy rate is 97.2%. In 2008, the region became India's first smoke-free zone.
