The district is one of the largest breadbaskets of Kerala and its economy is largely based on agriculture. This region is also the country of Palmyra. The current Palakkad administrative district was established on 1 January 1957 and consists of Palakkad, Perintalmannar, Ponnani, Ottapalam, Alatur and Chittoor. Palakkad, also known as Palghat and historically Palakkattussery, is a city and municipality in the Indian state of Kerala. It is the headquarters of Palakkad district. Palakkad is the most populous city and the fourth most populous city in the state. It was built under British rule before India's independence and was called Palghat. Palakkad is famous for the ancient Palakkad Fort in the heart of the city. The fort was captured and rebuilt by Hyder Ali in 1766 before falling to the Zamorin at 1784 km (216 mi).
