Wayanad is located in the northeastern part of the state of Kerala and has its administrative center in Kalpetta autonomous district. Wayanad district was formed as the 12th district of Kerala on 1 November 1980 and consists of Mananthavady, Sultanbateri and Vithiri Taluks. Wayanad is a district in the northeastern Indian state of Kerala, with its administrative center being the city of Kalpetta. This is the only hill in Kerala. Wayanad Plateau is an extension of the Mysore Plateau to the south of the Deccan Plateau, which connects the Western Ghats and the Eastern Ghats. It is located high in the Western Ghats, between 700 and 2100 meters above sea level. Vellari Mala is a 2,240 m (7,349 ft) peak located at the junction of Wayanad, Malappuram and Kozhikode districts and is the highest peak in Wayanad district. On November 1, 1980, the district was separated from Kozhikode and Kannur districts and was created as the 12th district of Kerala. The world covers an area of 885.92 square kilometers and is covered with forests. There are three cities in Wayanad: Kalpetta, Manansawadi and Sultanbatli. Many indigenous people live in this area. Kabini river is the source of Kaveri river and originates from Wayanad.
