Kottakkunnu is a hill station in Malappuram district in the Indian state of Kerala. Popularly known as Kotta Kunnu, this place is located at an altitude of 915 meters and is a popular tourist destination in Malappuram, Kerala. The name Kottakunnu comes from the fort built here when the area was the military headquarters of the Zamorin, ruler of Calicut. Due to the geographical importance of the area, a fort called Malappuram Fort was built here and the city of Malappuram emerged. This region became a part of Varuvanad. It is at the tip of the mountain and is a strategic place. Three parts are water, one part is a deep valley, and the upper part is flat like a platform.
