Palakkad Fort is said to have existed since ancient times but it is believed to have been built in its present form in 1766 AD, but not much is known about its early history. Local chief Palakkad Achchan was originally a Zamorin province but became independent in the 18th century. Maureen threatens invasion. Hyder Ali took this opportunity and captured places like Palghat and from then until 1790 the fort was in the hands of the Sultan of Mysore or the British. He was captured by Colonel Wood during the attack on Hyder Ali's fort in 1768, but was recaptured by Hyde a few months later. Colonel Fullarton recaptured the city in 1783 after an 11-day siege, but surrendered the following year. It later fell into the hands of the Zamorin army. He was captured by the British under the command of Colonel Stewart in 1790. It was renovated and used as a base of operations to succeed in the attack on Srirangapatnam. The castle remained garrisoned until the mid-19th century. It was converted into a taluk office in the early 1900s.
